How To Know When To Replace Tires

When To Replace My TiresAt times, it may be obvious that you need to replace your car’s tires. A quick look at the tread may show it has reached the indicator bars, meaning the tread—and the traction it provides—is almost gone.

When the tread of your vehicle’s tires is at or below the depth of 2/32nd of an inch, you should replace them. Before it reaches that point, you can use a few tools to measure this depth, including:

  • A penny
  • A tire tread depth gauge

For the penny, you’ll hold it so that Lincoln’s head is pointing downward and stick it into the tread. The penny should sink down to the point that it covers the top of Lincoln’s head. If, however, you can see most or all of his head, then it’s a good idea to have your car’s tires inspected.

If you purchase a tread depth gauge, you’ll have another way to measure. Simply insert the probe in between two strips of the tread and push down to get a reading.

How To Maintain Tires

When To Replace My TiresTaking care of your car tires will be easy through simple habits and routine maintenance. Tire sets could last upward of five or six years, so you’ll want to get the most out of them.

One great habit to implement is to drive more carefully. Avoid potholes when you can and aim to brake and accelerate smoothly. These habits reduce the overall strain on your car tires and keep the tread in better shape.
