New 2017 Nissan GT-R at Sheridan Nissan for New Castle, DE
The 2017 Nissan GT-R is a packed with value sports car, with a proven powerhouse inside and a sought-after body style. This car has been adored so much as to even get the nickname "Godzilla" from the racing community. Let's hop in the driver's seat and find out more about this sophisticated driving machine. For 2017, the GT-R gets its most extensive update since 2007, adding 20hp, styling front and rear, a new infotainment system, and a largely updated interior. Nissan added extra sound deadener and an acoustic glass windshield to make the drive quieter without losing the essential-to-good-driving engine resonances. Design changes for 2017 also contain a version of Nissan's "V-Motion" grille, more pronounced character lines on the reinforced hood, side sills pushed outward, new 20-inch wheels, and functional vents next to quad exhaust tips.
Under the GT-R's Hood
Looking for world-class processes and precision under the hood? The GT-R delivers here with an engine that is actually made in a special chamber sealed from pollutants and particles, by a single master tech (it even has a small plaque on the engine with that builder's name!). This is how a race car's engine for a racetrack is made as well. A 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged 24-valve V6 achieves 565 horsepower (at 6,800 rpm) and torque gets to 467 lb-ft at 3,300-5,800 rpm. Let's review the transmission: Dual-clutch 6-speed transmission with three driver-selectable modes, or, advanced Vehicle Dynamic Control: Normal, R-Mode (race), and Save. This is a rarer feature in that the car is designed to drive in slippery ice and snow much better than the normal sports car, which certainly reduces the anxiety level involved in driving it in those conditions. Fully automatic shifting or full sequential manual control via steering column-mounted paddle shifters. 4-wheel ABS with EBS. Double wishbone front suspension with aluminum arms, multi-link rear suspension with aluminum arms, rigid front and rear suspension subframes, assembled in high-precision jigs parallel to a race car, with 6-point mounting to body. Few cars come close, honestly, to the GT-R's 0-60 mph times of less than 3 seconds, or its advanced all-wheel-drive handling. A rigid body structure, special springs, and custom Bilstein DampTronic dampers help balance ride with track-ready handling. The first of its kind rear-based independent transaxle and an all-wheel-drive system dramatically aids handling by putting torque to the wheels that need it most at the right times.
Design of Nissan GT-R
The 2017 GT-R is currently available in Premium level only, and there are 2 available packages: The Premium Interior and the Cold Weather packages. Changes for 2017 bring the interior considerably upscale. Active noise cancellation helps with excessive road noise. An 8.0-inch touchscreen is there, and the number of knobs and switches has been condensed by almost two thirds since last year. A Display Command controller is added to the center console, and the GT-R has the NissanConnect system for navigation and connectivity to mobile apps, staying current with the times. The exterior certainly had a lot of aerodynamic changes occur, with wind being redirected not just away, but instead within to cool rear brakes and also back into the engine for power. The side skirts redirect better and the entire bottom of the car is now covered with light composite paneling so as to not slow it down with air getting in underneath. Actually one of those panels lets the air hit it just enough to dynamically pull the car closer to the ground at high speeds. LED lamps on the redesigned front light up the sides of the road measurably better than most, which is helpful when turning at night. Out the back, Titanium exhaust with Exhaust Sound Control will help you sound like the amazing vehicle you actually are driving, by enhancing exhaust notes, just in case someone doesn't realize.
